Lessons from a Seed: Living Water
“Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.'” John 4:13-14
Some seeds prefer warm, dry environments, while others require environments that are cold and moist. Some seeds require little to no water, while others need to be immersed in water to germinate. Therefore, water is also a vital key for the life of a plant. All seeds need to absorb and fill up with water, which is the first step in germination.
Water activates enzymes and provides the necessary hydration for growth. In the same way, the believer needs the living water that Jesus offers. This living water is His presence, His Spirit, and His Word, which refreshes and sustains us.
Water causes either a chemical trigger or a change in the seed coat. This is an obvious parallel to baptism—when one is immersed in water and, upon receiving God’s Spirit, the old is gone and we embrace our walk as a new life begins. Additionally, water is likened to the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 12:13), which we need to ask for and be replenished with daily on our walk with Christ.
When we drink deeply from the living water, we are spiritually nourished and empowered to grow in our faith. It quenches our spiritual thirst and becomes a source of eternal life within us.
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, thank You for the living water that You provide through Jesus Christ. Help me to drink deeply from Your presence and Word each day. Refresh my soul and sustain me with Your Spirit. May Your living water flow through me, bringing life and growth. Amen.
