Singing Pressing On the Upward Way
Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to hill. Psalm 95:1-2
“Pressing On the Upward Way,” also known as “Higher Ground,” is a 🎵hymn that expresses a believer’s desire for spiritual growth and a closer walk with God. Written by Johnson Oatman Jr., the hymn begins with the words: “I’m pressing on the upward way, new heights I’m gaining every day; still praying as I onward bound, ‘Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.’” I once heard a preacher once said ‘Our attitude determines our altitude’. Author Charles Spurgeon encourages the believer not to dwell in the “lowlands of bondage,” but aim for higher ground. No mediocrity, no pity parties, no complacency, no plateaus, no little thinking. Upward momentum always.
This hymn captures the essence of a heart striving for more in their relationship with God. It reflects a deep yearning to rise above the distractions and challenges of this world and to live a life that is pleasing to God. As we seek to press on to higher ground, we are reminded that it is through God’s grace and power that we are able to grow and ascend spiritually.
Identify a specific area in your spiritual life where you want to grow and then step out in faith. Spend time in prayer asking God to help you press on to higher ground in this area. Share your goal with a trusted friend or family member who can support and encourage you in your journey.
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to higher ground and for giving us the desire to grow closer to You. Although it might seem scary to step out on faith, help us to trust in You as we do. As we sing “Pressing On the Upward Way,” fill our hearts with a longing to rise above the challenges of this world and to live a life that honors You. Strengthen our faith and guide our steps as we seek to know You more deeply. Plant our feet on higher ground and help us to press on with joy and thanksgiving. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
