Faith in Depths
Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. Matthew 14:22
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where following God’s command led you into unexpected challenges or even danger? In Matthew 14:22-33, we read about the disciples who were sent by Jesus to cross the Sea of Galilee while He went up the mountain to pray.
As the disciples were rowing across the sea, they encountered a fierce storm that tossed their boat violently. Despite their best efforts, they made little progress, and fear gripped their hearts as they battled the raging waves. In the midst of the chaos, they saw Jesus walking on the water towards them. Initially, they thought He was a ghost and were terrified.
However, Jesus reassured them, saying, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Peter, filled with faith, responded, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” Jesus invited Peter to come, and Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking on the water towards Jesus.
This story reminds us that obedience to God’s call may lead us into challenging and even perilous situations. When we step out in faith to follow Jesus, we may find ourselves in dark, deep, and dangerous places. But in those moments, we must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
As Peter took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the storm raging around him, fear and doubt crept in, causing him to sink. He cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately, Jesus reached out His hand and caught him, saying, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” Just as Jesus reached out His hand to save Peter from sinking, He will always be there to rescue us when we falter. Even in the midst of life’s storms, we can trust in His faithfulness and goodness. Let us take courage and step out in obedience to God’s call, knowing that He is with us always, guiding us through the trials and leading us to victory.
Prayer for today: Thank you Lord, for the reminder that obedience to Your will may lead us into difficult and challenging situations. Help us to trust in Your faithfulness and goodness, even when we find ourselves in dark, deep, and dangerous places. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, and give us the courage to step out in obedience, knowing that You are with us always. Strengthen our faith, O Lord, and guide us through the storms of life, that we may walk in victory and bring glory to Your name. Amen.
