Senseless Thanks
Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:18-20
Our natural inclination is to thank God for what we comprehend. We get promoted – thank God. The guy we’ve been dating suddenly proposes, thank God. The application you put in for the new house, praise ye the Lord! We often have no problem being thankful for the blessings that fit neatly into the logic of our minds. However, the Spirit, when allowed to guide us, leads us to a higher form of thanksgiving—a senseless gratitude. It’s giving thanks for the inexplicable, the things that challenge our understanding. It’s giving thanks in the valley and not on the mountain top.
Senseless thanks is a gratitude that isn’t tethered to circumstances. It’s a song of praise sung not just on the sunny days but also when clouds gather overhead. It’s born in the valleys, where questions outnumber answers, and yet, gratitude becomes an anchor.
As a follower of Christ, we must understand the Spirit’s guidance invites us to trust in the unseen hand that governs the symphony of our lives. There are moments when circumstances might seem senseless, but in the grand narrative woven by God, there is a purpose (Romans 8:28). Even when life’s events baffle us, trusting the Spirit’s guidance allows us to say, “Thank you,” not just for what we see but for what God knows.
Prayer for today: Dear God, I surrender my understanding to the guidance of your Spirit. Teach me to give thanks beyond the boundaries of reason, even for things that make no sense to us. I want my gratitude be a testament of my trust in Your unseen hand working in every aspect of our lives. In the name of Christ, who leads us into profound thanks, we pray. Amen.
