Overflowing with Thanks
Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:18-20
In these verses, Paul directs our attention away from the intoxication of earthly substances and invites us to embrace a different kind of intoxication—an overflow of the Holy Spirit. It’s a spiritual inebriation that allows the spirit man to be infused with thanksgiving and praise. This manner of gratitude unleashes the Spirit’s song which strengthens the inner man to live with joy, peace, and gratitude to the Father.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not a silent experience. It’s an overflow that manifests in joyful expressions—singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. When gratitude becomes the melody of our hearts, it invites us to a place of thanksgiving that resonates in the heavens and transforms our earthly existence.
Prayer for today: Dear Heavenly Father, we come before you with hearts brimming with gratitude. Thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit, filling us with a joy that surpasses any worldly pleasure. May our lives be a melody of praise, singing psalms and hymns even in the midst of life’s challenges. Teach us to be thankful in all circumstances, knowing that you are at work in every situation. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we express our heartfelt thanks. Amen.
