The Profound Purpose Of Christmas
For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
Every December, we joyously declare, “Jesus is the reason for the season.” It’s a truth we hold dear, but let’s pause and think with me for a moment, what is your ‘why’ behind this statement. Why did Jesus, the Son of God, leave the splendors of heaven to dwell among us on Earth?
In brief, the answer is our sin. In the book of Genesis Adam and Eve enjoyed a perfect relationship with God and enjoyed His presence. However, the tranquility shattered with the fall. Adam and Eve succumbed to the serpent’s deception, and humanity, as a result, fell from grace. In that pivotal moment, Paul reminds us, “sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people because all sinned” (Romans 5:12).
The sin in the Garden of Eden infiltrated through all their descendants, touching every person in human history. This act of rebellion brought immediate spiritual death to all. Consequently, the need for sacrifice emerged to atone for the debt of sin. Why? Because the cost of our sin is death, and “without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness” (Hebrews 9:22).
This is why Jesus came. He came to die. This profound truth makes the Christmas story incredibly powerful. The narrative of Christmas is about the moment when God’s magnificent plan became a tangible reality. How? “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Jesus, the perfect Son of God, came to offer His life for our sins, bringing reconciliation between us and God.
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, in the midst of the festive season, may we grasp the profound purpose of Christmas. Thank you for the gift of your Son, who, in love, became the sacrificial lamb for our sins. As we celebrate, let our hearts be filled with gratitude for the profound meaning behind the nativity story. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
