The Wonderful Name
Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us. Matthew 1:23
In the hush of the Advent season, we turn our hearts toward the profound significance of the name above all names—Jesus. Names in the Bible were truly significant because they often told us the story of the person. In John 1:1 and in the first line of the song from Hillsong Worship – What A Beautiful Name; “You were the Word at the beginning . . .” This name, resonating with divine purpose, echoes through the ages, bringing hope, joy, and the promise of God’s abiding presence. Let’s embark on a journey of discovery as we unwrap the layers of the wonderful name—Jesus.
In the stillness of the night, an angelic proclamation shattered the silence: “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). This baby, born to Mary, held within Him the promise of salvation—a promise embedded in the very syllables of His name.
Immanuel—God with Us. As Joseph pondered the weight of his calling, the angel assured him, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (God with us)” (Matthew 1:23). In Jesus, divinity intertwined with humanity, bridging the gap and ensuring that God is not distant but intimately present. And that remains true, even until this day.
Prayer for today: Gracious Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus. As we reflect on His wonderful name, may our hearts be filled with gratitude and awe. Help us to embrace the profound significance of Immanuel, God with us. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.
