Silent God, Praise
As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. Psalm 42:1
On nights when we cannot sleep or the days when you find yourself wrestling with the world around you, it often feels like all hope is lost. In these moments, I began to quietly sing; “Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.”
The imagery in Psalm 42:1 is both vivid and relatable. The psalmist compares their deep longing for God to a deer’s longing for water. Just as a deer cannot thrive without water, our souls thirst for the presence of God to satisfy a deeper need within us.
If God inhabits the praises of His people; we must praise Him in the tornado-like storm going on around us. He will be with us through it all. Although it may be a minute; at the right time; He will speak. He will move. He will act. Run to Him my sweet friend. Run into the outstretched arms of your Savior and soon coming King. The psalmist’s words reveal the depth of their longing for God. They don’t just desire God; they long for Him with a yearning that goes beyond casual interest. This kind of longing comes from a heart that recognizes God as the source of life and fulfillment. This is the experience we have when we sing praises unto God.
Our spiritual thirst is a reminder of our need for God’s presence. Just as a deer needs water to thrive, our souls need God to flourish. It’s not a superficial desire but a recognition of our dependence on Him for sustenance, guidance, and purpose.
Prayer for Today: Heavenly Father, I will rest in Your righteous, strong arms. You will cover me with Your truths and shelter me till the storm passes over. You have. You are. You always will. “I love You Lord. Your mercies never fail me. All my days are held in Your hand. From the moment that I wake up, until I lay my head. I will sing of the goodness of God.”
