Great God
I depend on God alone; I put my hope in him. Psalm 62:5
The story of David and Goliath is one of the most iconic stories in the entire Bible. A teenage shepherd boy, the youngest in his family, defeats the greatest giant warrior to ever exist and delivers his nation. It’s inspiring and motivating, but it is so much more than that. The point of this story isn’t “look how great David is” but “look how great God is.” Like many stories in the Old Testament, the story doesn’t ultimately point to David, but to Jesus. As we stand back from the story of ‘small boy slays huge giant’, we can see that this is a picture of Jesus winning the victory over Satan. He too was ‘despised and rejected by men’ (Isaiah 53:3), but nevertheless He went ahead and finished the job to be done.
As David stepped forward to face the daunting challenge of Goliath, he assumed the role of a representative for Israel. The fate of Israel, both in the present and the future, rested upon David’s shoulders. In that defining moment, David transcended his individuality. He placed his unwavering trust in the God of the Covenant. Regardless of the eventual outcome, whether it would be victory or defeat, it carried profound implications for everyone present.
David defeated the Giant Goliath that stood in the way of God’s people. The Son of David (Jesus) would later come and defeat the giant of Sin that stood in the way between God & people.
Jesus was truly God and yet truly man. He represented mankind on the cross when he bore the sins of us all. The future of the human race and its salvation rested on Jesus. When Jesus defeated the ‘giant’ Satan, He was the representative for man but also for God. Jesus completed the job and declared ‘It is finished’ once and for all – hallelujah!
Prayer for today: Lord, today I thank You today for the truth that You initiated the New Covenant of Your love and mercy to me. Thank You that I’m in a Covenant relationship with You, through Jesus Christ, Your Son. Thank You for all that this means. Amen.
