Togetherness
All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. Acts 2:42
What are you devoted to today? This question always gives me pause. Time is purposeful and valuable when we are devoted to something or someone. How is that time spent? And most importantly does this time speak of my devotion to Jesus too? Devotion to anything requires focus and intentionality and often affects the choices we make. Today’s verse gives us a picture of the action of the believers while they waited on the promised Holy Spirit – they were together and on one accord.
Acts 2 tells of the early church and their devotion to Jesus Christ and togetherness. As a family they learned God’s Word, remembered what Jesus had done for them, prayed together, and also just enjoyed spending time together. This rhythm is essential to our walk with Christ. Our focus and purpose are still strengthened when we experience fellowship. As the Body of Christ we are one, and because we are one we are stronger individually. Every single day Christ is working in and through each one of us.
The truth is unless we plan with God, we will fail utterly. We will allow the busyness of the day to dictate the activities we are focused on. We need to plan with God’s purpose in mind. As the writer of Proverbs states, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21).
Prayer for today: Thank you, Lord, for reminding me that time spent with You and in the presence of believers is essential to my walk with You. Thank You for the gift of friendship and family in the body of believers. In Jesus Name, Amen.
