Can you see it?
Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.” 1 Kings 18:41
The expressive power of the human eye is so great that it determines, in a manner, the expression of the whole countenance. Consider our animals, the dog watches the eye of his master, and discovers from it, before a word is spoken, whether he is to expect a caress or apprehend chastisement. In the spiritual realm we too can use our eyes to see beyond what our eyes in the natural world tell us to see.
1n Kings 18 we know that Elijah prayed in faith. Elijah was on the mountain top, alone with God and praying for the showers to be poured out upon the thirsty land. Elijah did not see the rain, but he believed that the same God who delivered him on Mount Carmel would deliver him once again.
Notice, Elijah did not just sit back. We are told Elijah prayed. But what kind of prayer was this prayer? It was a prayer of faith, for it rested on the sure promises of God.
When we pray we need to make sure that our petition is founded upon the promise of God, for this reason when we pray we say ‘Thy will be done’ so that we are praying in accordance with His will.
For 3 ½ years there had been no rain; now Elijah goes before the Lord and asks Him to send the rain. Upon what ground did he make this prayer? Upon the ground of God’s own sure promise 1 Kings 18:1. God had said to Elijah, “And it came to pass after many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the earth.”
Elijah prayed on that which he could not see because he trusted in God to do that which was clearly His will. Answers to prayer are conditional upon our praying in accordance with God’s will. We can know His will and be sure of it, for He reveals it by His Word and by the Holy Spirit (1 John 5:14-15)
