Boiling Point
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
In science, boiling happens when liquid becomes gas, forming bubbles inside the liquid volume. When water is boiled, it undergoes a physical change, not a chemical change. The molecules of water don’t break apart into hydrogen and oxygen. Instead, what happens is the bonds between molecules of water break, allowing them to change physically from a liquid to a gas. In Christ we too change, our bodies do not break apart and we become someone new, instead the transformation on the inside allows us to reflect Christ on the outside.
Once we surrender our lives to God, He sends his Holy Spirit to dwell within us and begin a process of transformation. But into what exactly are we being transformed?
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18
Just like water boiling or as a home renovation takes time, our transformation is slow and steady. Day by day, God strips us of the old habits, breaks up some bonds and old thoughts that keep us blind and replaces them with truth.
When we reflect on the ways in which we have grown and matured, we can see how slowly, ever so slowly, God has been chipping away at the places in our lives that needed restoring. Be encouraged by the promise found in Philippians 1:6, “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
