Wisdom in Words
Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones. Provers 16:24
Very recently I was reminded of the words written in today’s scripture Proverbs 16:24 “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.” We continue to live through some challenging times and just as it takes a series of words to destroy we can choose to use a sentence to brighten and encourage. It is my prayer today that we never forget this truth – no one turns away a kind word. Kind and gracious words are a dessert for any occasion.
Kind and gracious words are a dessert for any occasion. They go into the ears and soul with sweet pleasure, and they enliven the heart and even the steps. A person’s face glows by their instant effect, and energy and vitality are restored to those cast down. You create such words out of thin air by your lips, when wisdom guides your speech (Proverbs 16).
Honey is a luxurious food God created for man’s benefit. He described Canaan, the wonderful land of promise, as a land flowing with milk and honey (Exodus 3:8; Deuteronomy 8:7-9). The manna He gave Israel tasted like wafers made with honey (Exodus 16:31).
Just as honey brings delight and satisfaction, so can pleasant and edifying words. Just as nutritious foods help to build human health, so wise and loving words can build up the spiritual and emotional health of people. Building up others (“edifying” is the biblical word) is a major responsibility of the follower of Christ.
Look for a way today to build up and encourage another person by the words you speak to them. Let your words be like honey to their soul.
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your word that teach me how important my words are. I am reminded today of the power which lies in the tongue. May my words be used as honey to heal and build up. I lean on You to direct my thoughts and voice. Lord help me to remain quiet when I am unsure of what to say. Instead help me to seek You first so that You will first direct me in what to say. Thank You that the victory has already been sealed for me through You, in Jesus name, Amen.
