Tarzan
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5
Tarzan is a Disney animated film that follows an orphaned (Tarzan), living in the remote African wilderness, being raised by the gentle gorilla Kala. When a British expedition enters the jungle, Tarzan encounters the beautiful Jane and recognizes that, like her, he’s human. He falls in love with Jane and is then torn between embracing civilization and staying with his gorilla family.
There are so many directions to take with this story as it concerns our spiritual life, but for today I will stick with his transport. Tarzan traveled throughout the jungle by swinging on vines. It can be assumed that sometime early on in Tarzans life the gorilla taught him how to climb and hold onto this rope that will keep him mobile. And now here is this guy swinging from tree to tree with amazing agility and grace. Without a doubt Tarzan assumed the next rope would always be there, ready for him to catch. What I did notice was that there were two aspects essential to his momentum as he went forward.
The first was he had to grab the next rope, trust it was fine, and then let go of the first rope. If he didn’t let go of the first rope he was either going to just stop in midcourse, or split himself in half. He had to let go and trust the rope was going to take him further in his journey.
The second was that sometimes he had to leap to the next rope after he’d let go of the first. In order for Tarzan to get to the next rope he had to step out in faith. For a few seconds there would be nothing but open space below him, and just a rope ahead that he had to catch. As he caught it, again he had to trust that it was alright, and then he could carry on his journey.
The question for today is – has the Lord asked you to trust Him and let go? If so, are willing to let go and trust that God in control? Maybe it’s time to take that leap of faith, swing out and not worry knowing that the Lord will provide the next rope that you need.
Prayer for today: Loving Father, Heavenly Father, I am willing to let go and catch the next rope. I now trust You with the next stage of this journey and thank You that You will never leave me. Father, I am weak so I ask that You give me the strength that I need to take this next step. Help me to be at peace with the path that You have laid out for me as I now decide to continue on the journey You have called me on. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
