The Blessed Man of God
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper. Psalm 1:1-3
The word ‘blessed’ has always carried with it the understanding that it’s God who is giving us good things in our lives. In today’s Scripture the Psalmist says that a person is blessed if he does not do one kind of thing but instead does another. The person who wants to be blessed must first get lost in the Word of God. This person should not walk down the road of those who rebel against God, have no fear of God, and consider themselves above God’s law. No, instead a person who wants to be blessed must live wisely in his relationship with God, delighting and meditating on God’s Word.
When God sees this longing in the hearts of His people, He responds in love. He protects them from harm, and bestows favor and honor on them. He withholds no good thing from them. They enjoy His blessings on their life. The psalmist concludes by saying ‘O LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you! (Psalm 84:12).
As Christians we too can be in this place of blessing, walking close to the Lord and enjoying His favor, worshipping Him, and trusting in Him.
