When a servant moves
His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” John 2:5
I sometimes struggle with being an obedient servant. Often, I think too much and in doing so allow the flesh to distract me from the instructions of God. In these moments, I often remind myself that God calls us to Him alone and step out in faith. Sometimes fear gets the best of us and causes us to miss what God desires to do in our lives. We miss out on the great blessing that comes through obedience because we delay, we justify, and we try and understand before moving. But God is not calling us to hesitate when He gives us a command He is just calling for us to trust in Him.
The people that Mary spoke to in today’s verse were servants. John 2:5 says, ‘His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it”. These servants were used to being told what to do. They understood that it was not their position to question a command but instead to do what is being asked of them. Likewise, in order to move as God directs we must learn that servants are here to serve.
Until we recognize that we too are servants, then we will continue to come up with a list of excuses as to why we cannot do so. We will not step out in faith. We will continue to do what makes us comfortable and will miss out on seeing the bigger picture through obedience.
We don’t have to have all the answers before making the first step. Just obey and trust in God to handle the rest.
