Hold Onto It
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. Philippians 4:8
In Philippians 4 Paul is teaching that faith does not stem from some magical hoopla instead it comes from what we choose to hold onto. While we cannot choose the thoughts that we have, those who we come in contact with and God allows in our lives, we can choose what we hold onto.
You may be suffering spiritually because you come to church for one hour and then spend the rest of the week filling your mind with spiritual junk food. Many people struggle with negative thinking. Negative thoughts poison the mind, and ultimately the soul. However, when we change our thoughts we have the opportunity to change our world. You can either let your thoughts lead you to destruction or you can let (force) them lead you to victory. If we are going to have faith and defeat the enemy of our soul on this journey we must not allow him to enter into our minds.
So what must you do when a negative thought enters? Ask yourself the question, is it true? Is it noble? Is it of good report? Is it right? Is it lovely? If the answer to this is NO, then you must take this thought captive and make it obedient to God’s Word. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says that we should “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” In order to do that, you’ve got to look at the sources of your input. If you truly want your life to change, find a friend who can hold you accountable.
Today my encouragement is simple – you have the power to change your situation by changing your thoughts. Think on the things that is worth of His praise! This is not some abstract philosophy but a call to a personal relationship. If Christ is in your thoughts, then you can smile at whatever storms of life and say “It is well”
