Godly Presence
The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:14
Children who sleep in the same bed as their parents usually have a good night’s sleep. This is because a parent helps them to fall asleep at bedtime, and they find rest knowing the presence of the parent is there.
Moses was probably the greatest leader of all time. His task was impossible – leading a nation of rebellious people who were unwilling to follow him and preferred to go back to slavery in Egypt. And after one devastating incident involving a golden calf, Moses was told once again to pick up the pieces and keep marching on. God called Moses to lead the people on another stage of their journey, with the promise that an angel would go ahead of them. I can imagine Moses, hesitant to continue on this journey but as the child fell asleep soundly because of the presence of a parent, Moses moved forward. Moses had an impossible task ahead, one which could never be accomplished without the known presence of God. His next prayer came from a concerned heart ‘If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.” The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
God’s ways are always in keeping with His character. God promises to be with us every step of the way, and if we hold onto God’s word as truth when the storms of life come in then we will find ourselves safe in the eye of the storm.
The God who revealed Himself to Moses, and showed him His ways, is the same today. The way ahead for us may not be easy. We may have to take an unknown path, but we can be assured of God’s presence on our journey and we needn’t be afraid.
