Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him. Psalm 40:3

There is something powerful about looking back. Sometimes, when we are in the middle of a difficult season, all we can see is what is happening right now. We see the problem, the waiting, the uncertainty, and the things we still need God to work out. But every once in a while, God invites us to stop looking ahead and look back. Look at where you were, look at what you walked through, look at the doors He opened, look at the doors He closed, look at the times you thought you wouldn’t make it, and give thanks for the prayers He answered. The song I Thank God by Housefires reminds us of the joy that comes from remembering what God has brought us out of.

David understood the power of remembering what God had done. He wrote: “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him.” Psalm 40:3. Notice what happened after God brought David through his situation. God gave him a new song. Sometimes God brings us through something so that we can sing about His faithfulness on the other side. There are songs you can only sing after you’ve cried. There are praises you can only give after you’ve survived. There are testimonies you can only tell because God carried you through something you could not have carried yourself through. This is when your testimony becomes an anchor. When fear says, “God won’t come through this time,” you can look back and say, “But He did it before.” When doubt says, “I don’t know how I’ll get through this,” you can remember, “I didn’t know how I would get through that either, and God carried me.”

When you don’t know what to pray, sometimes the best prayer is simply: “Thank You for what You’ve already done.” And your praise can become the new song God has placed in your mouth. Today, take some time to remember. Think about where you were a year ago. Five years ago or even ten years ago. Think about what you prayed for that God answered. Think about what you thought would destroy you but didn’t. Think about the moments when God made a way and then know if He was faithful then, you can trust Him now.

Prayer for Today: Lord Jesus, thank You for everything You have brought me through. Sometimes I become so focused on what I still need that I forget to celebrate what You have already done. Today, help me remember the moments when You made a way. Remind me of the prayers You answered. Remind me of the times You protected me, provided for me, strengthened me, and carried me. Thank You for bringing me out of places I thought I would never leave. Let my testimony become worship. Use my story to encourage someone who is still walking through a season that You have already brought me through. And when I face something new, help me look back before I look around.
