Therefore we will not fear\u2026\u201d<\/em><strong> Psalm 46:1-2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is hard for me to say which of these hymns will be my favorite, but I can say that today\u2019s hymn is definitely in my top five. It Is Well with My Soul is a hymn born out of profound sorrow and unwavering faith. Horatio Spafford wrote this hymn after the tragic loss of his four daughters in a shipwreck. In the midst of unimaginable grief, he found words to express something that can be difficult for us to understand: a deep peace and trust in God even when life is filled with sorrow.<\/p>\n<p>The words of the hymn say:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen peace like a river attendeth my way,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When sorrows like sea billows roll;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It is well, it is well with my soul.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Spafford was not saying that everything was well. His circumstances were anything but. Instead, he was declaring that his soul could be well because his trust was in God.<\/p>\n<p>The hymn challenges us to consider where our peace comes from. When everything around us is calm, it may be easy to say, \u201cIt is well.\u201d But what happens when the waves come? When sorrow rolls over us like sea billows, can we still trust that God is with us?<\/p>\n<p>Today, let the words of It Is Well with My Soul remind you that peace does not mean the absence of sorrow. Sometimes peace means knowing that even in the middle of sorrow, God is still our refuge, God is still present, and God is still worthy of our trust. Whatever your circumstances may be today, may you be able to echo the words of this beloved hymn: \u201cIt is well, it is well with my soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prayer for today<\/strong>: <em>Loving Father, in times of joy and in times of sorrow, help us to find our peace in You. As we sing &#8220;It Is Well with My Soul,&#8221; may we be reminded of Your faithfulness and the comfort that comes from trusting in Your promises. Fill us with Your peace, and let our souls be well in Your presence.
