The description sounded perfect. But perhaps you didn’t read the reviews. You made an impulse purchase only to discover, once you received the item, that the reviews were right. Yeah, everything about it looked exactly like what you wanted. But when the package arrived, what was delivered wasn’t what was advertised. This is similar to what happened in Joshua 9. What looked like a good decision became a disappointment. The Israelites were moving forward in the promises of God. They had crossed the Jordan River. The walls of Jericho had fallen. Ai had been conquered. God was giving them victory after victory. Then, suddenly, a group of people called the Gibeonites showed up and deceived them into making a covenant God instructed them not to do.

The Gibeonites knew they could not defeat Israel through warfare, so they chose deception. They arrived with stale bread, worn-out clothing, cracked wineskins, and a convincing story. Everything looked legitimate.

The problem wasn’t that Joshua failed to examine the evidence. The problem was that he trusted what he saw more than he sought God.

Many of us have been there. An opportunity looked perfect. A relationship seemed ideal. A decision appeared obvious. Everything lined up on paper, but something was missing; we never truly sought God’s direction.

Not everything that looks good is from God. Not every open door was opened by God. Discernment begins when we recognize that appearances can be manipulated, but God sees the truth. Today, consider the decisions you are currently evaluating and then ask yourself the question, have you spent as much time praying as researching? Are you relying more on what you see or what God says?

Prayer for today: Father, help me remember that appearances can be deceiving. Give me wisdom to look beyond what seems convincing and seek Your truth above all else. Teach me to value Your voice more than my own judgment. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Monday, June 8 When Appearances Are Convincing So the Israelites examined their food, but they did not consult the Lord.
