I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. Ezekiel 36:26

God describes the New Covenant as one in which He Himself removes our hearts of stone and gives us hearts of flesh. A “heart of stone” is stubborn, resistant, and self-willed, but a “heart of flesh” is soft, pliable, and responsive to God’s Spirit. This change is not merely an outward transformation but an inner awakening that makes us sensitive to God’s voice and responsive to His guidance. This powerful transformation illustrates how our old, sin-filled nature is replaced with a new, spirit-filled nature. It is the sign of a new life, a fresh beginning, a heart that beats in rhythm with God’s desires.

God’s Spirit works within us, changing us from the inside out, awakening desires in us to “walk in His statutes.” This is the spiritual awakening every believer longs for—the internal evidence that we have truly been given a new heart. We begin to experience a renewed passion and hunger to serve God and walk in His ways.

Consider the New Testament account when Jesus spoke to Nicodemus, He revealed the necessity of being “born again.” At first, Nicodemus struggled to grasp the concept, but Jesus gently pointed him to the New Covenant prophesied in the Old Testament—a promise that would come to fruition through Christ. The New Covenant brings a radical, spiritual awakening, as God’s Spirit takes up residence in us, transforming us completely.

So, how do we enter into this New Covenant and experience the spiritual awakening of a new heart? How do we receive a heart that beats for God? By believing in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. It is through Him that we are spiritually awakened. We simply need to ask Him today to remove our heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh—one that is responsive to His love, His will, and His way.

Prayer for today: Thank You, Lord, for the spiritual awakening You bring. We praise You for giving us a new heart that beats in rhythm with Your desires. We thank You for causing us to walk in Your statutes and empowering us to live for You. We surrender ourselves to You today and ask that You continue to transform us from the inside out. May Your Spirit lead us to victory and peace this day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thursday, March 6 A New Heart: Spiritual Awakening And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you.
