Despite Cyrus being a heathen ruler, he was instrumental in fulfilling God’s purpose of liberating the Israelites. The reference to “treasures hidden in the darkness” pertained to the gold and silver that lay buried beneath the ground. While King Cyrus may have been motivated by material wealth, God had a greater intention. I am always amazed when God works beyond what my feeble mind can see. Here we see God desired for Cyrus to recognize Him as the Lord, the God of Israel, and the One who called him by name.

God often works this way. God frequently employs various means to communicate with us, choosing avenues that resonate with our individual circumstances. In the case of Cyrus, God recognized his fervent pursuit of wealth and skillfully seized upon this motivation to capture his attention. We often mistakenly perceive life’s treasures to be earthly riches, opulent attire, career advancements, or accolades. However, an invaluable treasure lies in the profound understanding that the omnipotent God of the universe is actively at work even in the midst of darkness.

Now just because you know God is working doesn’t mean you won’t feel frustrated along the way. There’s always something to laugh about — even in the darkness. When adjusting to an inconvenience, physical limitation or a relationship problem, we must look for things to be grateful for. There are secret riches such as truth, trust, and patience. Whatever you’re facing today, may it work out to bring glory to the God of Israel. He’s the One who brings hidden treasures to light.

Prayer for today: Lord, thank You for working in my life, even in ways I don’t realize. Give me wisdom to accept what you are doing even when I don’t understand. May those around me watch my life and know there is a God in heaven. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Monday, July 3 When God Works I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.” Isaiah 45:3 In Isaiah chapter 45, we witness God addressing the Persian King Cyrus.
