If God is for us, who is against us. Romans 8:31

Amid life’s challenges, it can be easy to feel discouraged and powerless. But God’s Word reminds us that God wants us to be victorious in everything we do. We do not have to feel content with just getting by, because we are “more than conquerors”. This is the core truth of the gospel is found in Romans 8:31: “God is for us” and Paul asks if God is for us who can stand against us? Who can bring a charge against God’s chosen people?

Paul builds upon this core truth to help us understand what it means. As it was for Paul and for the early followers of Jesus Christ, our life is full of hardships. God, who loves us, will never abandon us. Jesus Christ proves this love through his ministry, death, and resurrection. He does not condemn us. He loves us and intercedes for us (vs. 34).

If we don’t already understand it becomes clear in the closing verses of this passage. Whatever happens, we are “more than conquerors through him who loved us” (vs. 37). No hardship on earth can do away with God’s love for us in Jesus Christ. Paul says, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord’. (vs. 38-39).

What does it mean to you that God is for you?

What difference does that truth make in your daily life?

How have you seen God’s love at work for you during times of hardship or pain?

Today I encourage you to read more about God’s love in Romans 8:31-39.

Prayer for today: Precious Lord and Savior, Lord, I know that since You are standing with me, going before me, hedging me in with your grace and your power, there is nothing I cannot do!
