In fact, Paul even drives that point home by saying “this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Rejoicing always, praying continually, and giving thanks in everything are God’s will for His people. “Why?” we might ask. Because we trust that God is watching over our lives continually; that whatever happens comes through the filter of His will—His goodness and love. Even if things are difficult, we can trust Him.

Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 is always encouraging. God desires for us to be joyful, prayerful, and thankful at all times. You may say, “But I feel like a hypocrite giving thanks when I don’t feel like it.” We do not walk this walk by sight or feelings but on faith. If we obey God, the sincerity and feelings will follow. We walk by faith and not by sight. In faith, hope, and love we can be joyful, prayerful, and thankful.

We are called to rejoice, pray, and give thanks—all the time, in everything!
