You can find this verse on t-shirts, plaques, journals, calendars, our walls, and in various other items or places to remind us to trust the Lord. While I believe this is a great foundation to build on, without the study of the whole text, the verse in itself can become stale and even misconstrued.

Proverbs 3 is a beautiful letter which begins with the words “my son” or “my child” depending on the version you are reading. This shows us that this portion of Scripture isn’t necessarily a command with a strong pointing finger from a cruel father, but one which is written out of a deep, personal love for the reader. The words of Scripture are deeply personal, and they are meant to be bathed with a tone of compassion and of wisdom of someone who lives out the words on the paper. Proverbs 3 is a goldmine of wisdom. However, if we stop at verse 5, we miss out on so much more wisdom that was penned thousands of years ago.

When we stop at verse 5 we miss out on verse 6, instructing us to ‘seek God’ or verse 9 ‘honor the Lord with your wealth…or best part of everything you produce’. What about verse 13 which says “Joyful is the person who finds wisdom”, this is why you should keep reading. Do not miss out on God’s wisdom, for God’s wisdom is a treasure. Never lose sight of it—memorize His word, allow yourself to grow, and remember to treat others in a manner reflective of children of God. The Lord is faithful, and His Word endures forever.

Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, thank You Lord for loving me.
